WoW From a N00B
Jan 01-10
After playing Dungeons and Dragons Online (DDO), my eyes were opened to the idea of MMORPGs. I tried my hand at a classic RPG called Dungeon Siege when we lost internet, and it wasn’t a bad game. It was very simple, but was fun until I ran into a glitch which wouldn’t allow me to go any further. There were cool things you could do like control your party member (an NPC you were slightly forced to join with… I mean you could decline, but why would you). And then I played a few others… PerfectWorld (if you die, you are taken to a “safe zone” which may or may not be surrounded by extremely high level monsters), Bright Shadow (wasn’t bad. didn’t get to play much because my stupid computer would lag really bad, but it has really great music. the monsters will run from you and heal while they’re running to take you down, though.), and now WoW. My curiosity started after watching my roommate play, and then he got Joe a game card. I made a hunter (for the pet) and had a blast. Now I’m hooked.
So far, I have only made a night elf hunter, a troll hunter, a human rogue, and an undead warrior. Sadly, if the realm you decide to play in has a character (made by someone on your account) on one side, you cannot make a second character on the other side. First character is horde, all characters are horde. Which is why I have undead in there. I wanted an RP server for a character I’m working on, and my husband already had a horde member on there.
The character creation isn’t bad. I do find it interesting that on the Alliance side, only night elves can be hunters, yet there is only one race not allowed the hunter class in Horde. That makes me a bit angry, since Even (the character from a story I’m writing made into WoW form) is human. But his class is definitely hunter, because of an alternate timeline thanks to some dark magic.
Anyway, troll character creation is fun, because they have tusks. However, the hair style is limited. Undead hair isn’t too terrible, but humans definitely have the upper hand, I think. I’m trying to do this from memory here. Night elves aren’t too bad on hair either. Yes, hair is a big deal.
Sadly, the only colors you can choose for your poor character is skin color and hair color. No eye color, which is another big thing for me. I’m very picky with how I want my characters to look.
Word of advice: When creating a night elf, if you want to be unique, do not pick blue or green hair. Everybody has blue or green hair. My hunter now has purple hair. And it looks good. (Yes, there are barbers to change things if you don’t like what you have, but it will cost you).
When leveling up, you want to go to your class trainer and see if he/she has new things to teach you. At level 10. you get your talent tree (I believe) where you put ranks into skills you want to get more powerful. Choose carefully, because you only get so many talent points, and there isn’t a way to undo your click that I have found (learned the hard way.).
As for durability on weapons and armor; If you see a body in the screen to the left of the minimap, go to a weapon/armor merchant immediately; especially if some of the parts on the body are red. Red means zero durability, which means it doesn’t work. There is an icon on the bottom of the goods screen (after talking with them, the screen comes up with the stuff he/she sells) that looks like an anvil. Click it. Click repair all. Done. No more body by the minimap.
Oh and here’s a cool thing. There is a symbol to the left of the map (under the AtlasLootFu add-on icon if you have it) that will track what you want it to track like the bank, merchants, repairs, etc. It’s nice and very useful. The only problem is it only shows up on your minimap, and it doesn’t say whether what you are tracking is in the town you are in or not.
On a PVP server (or realm), level 80 people will come and kill the people you need to give quests to. They will eventually respawn. Tip: Don’t hit the level 80 people unless you can take them. They can’t hurt you unless you hurt them first or try to. So be smart, level 5′s.
I’m sure there is more I could add, but I can’t think of it right now. I will probably put something a bit better compiled than this on Associated Content eventually.
If you have other tips for noobs like myself or other POSITIVE things to say, please comment. I won’t approve negative comments, so don’t waste your time.
